Introduction
In our home, we’ve always eaten quite a lot of meat.
It’s not something I decided recently or a trend I followed.
It’s simply how things have always been.
And what I found interesting is what happened when my children started eating.
They accepted red meat straight away. No hesitation. No effort.
Whereas:
- vegetables… took longer
- legumes… as well
- even fish, depending on the type
And over time, I’ve often wondered: Is it just coincidence… or does the body recognise what it needs?
I don’t have a definitive answer, but I’ve come across some ideas that help make sense of it.
Why is meat nutritionally valuable?
It helps to step away from opinions and look at the facts.
Meat, particularly red meat, is one of the most nutrient-dense foods available.
It provides:
- complete proteins (all essential amino acids)
- haem iron (more easily absorbed than plant-based iron)
- vitamin B12 (essential and almost absent in plant foods)
- zinc, selenium
- B vitamins
These nutrients are especially important during childhood, pregnancy and growth stages.
Organisations such as the World Health Organization recognise meat as a valuable source of essential micronutrients, particularly in populations at risk of deficiencies.
Why do many children accept meat easily?
There’s something quite interesting here.
Some research on infant feeding behaviour suggests that:
- humans may have an innate preference for energy-dense foods
- the umami taste (found in meat) is naturally appealing
Umami taste is linked to amino acids like glutamate and is associated with protein-rich foods. This could help explain why many children accept meat early on. Although, as always in nutrition, it’s not universal.
Grass-fed vs conventional meat
This is where an important nuance comes in. Grass-fed meat comes from animals raised on pasture, in more traditional systems.
What’s different?
Some studies suggest that grass-fed meat may have:
- a better fatty acid profile (more omega-3)
- higher levels of certain antioxidants
- a more balanced omega-6 to omega-3 ratio
Does this mean conventional meat isn’t a good option?
No. And it’s important to say this clearly.
Conventional meat is still a nutritious food. It still provides: complete protein, iron and vitamin B12.
And in many situations it can still be a better option than not consuming meat at all (especially if alternatives are not carefully planned).
Is meat necessary?
From a scientific perspective: it is possible to follow a diet without meat but it requires careful planning from an specialist to prevent deficiencies (especially for nutrients like B12, iron and DHA).
Organisations such as the British Dietetic Association state that vegetarian diets can be adequate, but when well planned.
In real life:
- not everyone plans perfectly
- not every family has the time or knowledge
So for many people meat remains a simple and effective way to meet nutritional needs.
What about the environmental impact?
This is probably the most debated topic. And again, there are important nuances.
Some intensive farming systems do have a significant environmental impact. But not all livestock systems are the same.
Well-managed grazing systems can:
- support soil health
- contribute to carbon cycling
- promote biodiversity
Organisations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization highlight that environmental impact depends greatly on how animals are raised.
So reducing the conversation to “meat is bad for the planet” is, at the very least, an oversimplification.
How I see it (in our home)
After reading, learning and observing…
My approach today is quite simple:
- prioritise quality meat when possible
- without stressing if it’s not always grass-fed
- include meat as a regular part of our meals
And something I find important: to also listen to the body and the family context.
Because we don’t eat in a lab.
We eat at home.
Conclusion
Meat is not a perfect food. But it’s also not the enemy it’s sometimes made out to be.
It is a traditional and nutrient-rich food present across many cultures throughout history. When eaten with balance, as part of a real-food approach, it can be a very valuable tool.
As with most things in nutrition, it’s not about extremes.
It’s about context.
Quality.
And balance.
